What's Business For? by Charles Handy
- Integrity and virtue are so essential to an economy because it so rare now. As mentioned in the article, "What's Business For?" by Charles Handy he mentions how about "90% of Americans thought that those running their companies could not be trusted to look over their employees." (Handy, 2002). They also feel that most bosses and executives only care about the progress of their business and the money they make, and they will do whatever it takes to get to that point. Those facts are sad, and sadly it is true for many companies, but that is not the way things should be done. We need to start switching that around because lying and cheating doesn't get you anywhere at the end of the day except possibly jail.
- The "real justification" for business is make money so that they can create something greater. The product or something that the company seeks to create is the justification. The problem is that so many people are currently so focused on the profit and not making something better that they will do all they can to make sure they continue making money. The views and correct perspectives have switched, and it needs to change.
- He suggested that if companies start treating their employees more like human beings and giving them rewards for being honest and hard-working and if business seek to do good for the community rather than just themselves, a lot of positive changes will happen. I agree with both of these because I have had jobs where I feel like I was hired to just help the company make money, and was not treated like a human being with feelings. I just had to act like a robot that did everything that was asked at all times. I also feel like I have been apart of companies who seek money more than the welfare of others, and neither of those things made me happy at all. I quickly found my way out of those jobs because I was exhausted, frustrated, and didn't feel right about how the company was running. Now, that I am apart of a company who cares about its employees and clients, I see the difference and feel it. It's amazing how beneficial it is for everyone when we just play by the rules
Attitude on Money by Stephen W. Gibson
- My current view of money is that it is very important and needs to be focused on. I am looking to get a house soon and start a family within the next few years, so I feel very driven by money. Everything that I need and want in my future relies on money right now, so a lot of my hard work and drive is focused on it. However, I do want to say that my focus on money is a healthy one. I am just looking to make money so I can progress in life, but I am not looking for status or power. I am not motivated by those things.
- The view we have on money can ruin or elevate our lives. If we are motivated by worldly success, possessions, and status, we often will make mistakes that we can't take back and will do anything we can to make money whether it is morally right or not. However, if we view money in a positive way and not only find ways to elevate our current circumstances but those of others we can be richly blessed. We can provide the necessities of life for people in need, help the sick, and so on. The way we view money is everything.
- Some rules for prosperity that he mentioned is to remember that all blessings come from God and to to be mindful of the filters we put on the world and success as a whole. We can do so much good in the world and for ourselves if we view money in a healthy way. It needs to be an added bonus to our lives put not be the main focus for everything that we do. We need to be mindful of how we are acting and make sure we are living according to our ethical guardrails in our lives.
